Get Bent (Rock Hard Roots #2) by C.M. Stunich

INTENSE. That's the only word I can think of at the moment. I think I'm still holding my breath. C.M. Stunich really knows how to keep you on your toes...and dying for her next book to come out!!!

I absolutely loved getting caught up in the web if craziness that is Naomi and Turner's relationship. And I hated it at the same time. This series seriously has me sucked in. I can't wait to finally get to the bottom of who is responsible for this giant mind f*$k!!! (Aside from C.M. of course)

If you liked Real Ugly your going to LOVE Get Bent!!!! I know I did. I guess I'll have to go check out another one of her series' until Tough Luck (Rock Hard Roots #3) is released!!

BLOG TOUR: Hard Rock Roots (Realy Ugly & Get Bent) by C.M. Stunich

Real Ugly

Turner Campbell is an asshole.
I f*cking hate him.
But I can't get enough either.
He sings like an angel and f*cks like a devil.
If I could, I'd run away and never look back because to tell you the truth, I think this man might be the death of me.

***

Naomi Knox is a bitch.
I can't f*cking stand her.
But I can't stop thinking about her either.
She looks like an angel and plays like a devil.
If I could, I'd f*ck her good and forget all about her, but to tell you the truth, I think this woman might be my last saving grace.

Get Bent

Naomi Knox is missing.
I don't even f*cking know whether she's dead or alive.
What I do know is that she's the air I need to breathe.
She's my redemption, an all consuming fire that burns in my blood.
And I'll do anything to find her. Anything. Even if means the end for me.
& & &
Turner Campbell is searching.
But he has no f*cking clue what it is he's searching for.
There's darkness all around and enough secrets to choke.
There are angels, and there are devils. It's impossible to tell them apart.
Light needs to be shone on the truth, but there's no one left to hold the torch. The line between life and death is blurred, and the players are all thoroughly entrenched in the game. The question is: am I still one of them?

About the Author

C.M. Stunich was raised under a cover of fog in the area known simply as Eureka, CA. A mysterious place, this strange, arboreal land nursed Caitlin's (yes, that's her name!) desire to write strange fiction novels about wicked monsters, magical trains, and Nemean Lions (Google it!). She currently enjoys drag queens, having too many cats, and tribal bellydance.

Always a fan of the indie scene and 'sticking it to the man,' Ms. Stunich decided to take the road less traveled and forgo the traditional publishing route. You can be assured though that she received several rejections as to ensure her proper place in the world of writers before taking up a friend's offer to start a publishing company. Sarian Royal was born, and Ms. Stunich's books slowly transformed from mere baking chocolate to full blown tortes with hand sculpted fondant flowers.

C.M. is a writer obsessed with delivering the very best and scours her mind on a regular basis to select the most unusual stories for the outside world.

Character Bios

NAOMI KNOX
Naomi Knox is hardcore.  She has to be.  Growing up without parents will do that to a person, especially when you're subjected to the horrors only a special type of foster family can provide …  But she can play a mean guitar and she'll write music that'll make Beethoven weep in his grave.  Just don't ask about her dirty, little secrets.  Well, I suppose little isn't exactly the right word.  Huge.  Monstrous.  Looming.  Maybe those are better choices?

TURNER CAMPBELL
Turner is a special kind of guy.  He grew up without respect, so he demands it, even if it makes him come across as a bit of an asshole.  He's got piercings and tats for days, and a mouth with no filter.  If you're expecting wise words woven into his insults, you're looking in the wrong place.  Turner Campbell's searching; he just doesn't know what it is that he's searching for.  But he does have tattoos on his … well, you know.  Yep.  All over down there.  Bats and spider webs.  Kinda cool, right?

Excerpts

REAL UGLY
Through my sunglasses, I see a face just offstage, hiding in the shadows with a smirk.
Turner.  Turner fucking Campbell is watching me screw this crowd with my axe, and I can't breathe.  For a moment, I'm afraid my fingers are going to slip, and I'm going to blow this whole gig, but the inner me, the one I dragged out, turns up the notch on my smirk and slides my tongue across my lips.  Oh my god!  What the hell am I doing?  I flick it out and suck it back in, melding into Wren, sliding against him like we're screwing back to back.  And I don't even like the guy.  I don't like either of these guys, but I can't stop myself.  The music's taken over me, and will do what she fucking pleases.
I watch Turner watching me, and see that his brown eyes are glittering dark, like a night sky filled with stars.  It's so off-kilter with his personality that it really throws me for a loop.  Once again, I find myself having trouble hating him.  Seem to be having a lot of trouble with my loathing abilities as of late.  Guess when I get onstage, I am just fucked.
Our duet ends and Wren pulls away leaving me cold.  And in the middle of an impromptu solo.  Shit.
Luckily, Amatory Riot has functioned as a unit long enough for the others to follow me, modifying our song right then and there.  The crowd goes fucking wild, and the air escapes my lungs.  The lights overhead shift and I find myself bathed in color.  My eyes shift to search for Turner again, and I'm glad I'm wearing these shades.  If he knew I was looking for him, I'd never live it down.
A gasp goes up on my right and Turner appears out of nowhere, snatching my mic from its stand and grabbing Hayden around the waist.  He makes a little come on gesture at me and then leans forward and grabs my lips with his.
I don't stop playing; I can't.  Even if I wanted to, I couldn't stop the burst of fucking power that's just taken hold of me.  I'm both a victim and a master to it as it draws my hands along the neck and plucks strings with a violent fervor that both scares and amazes me.  Hot wet heat takes over my mouth and pulls the rest of the inner me out, and then I'm kissing Turner back hard and fast and furious while the world's most intense riffs are just pulled straight through me, cutting me up and bleeding me over the stage.
When he pulls away, our eyes lock tight, and I know he can see right through my shades, through my head, and straight down into me.  It's a trick; it's gotta be.  I want to remember the way he spoke to me on the phone, the way he left that poor girl half-naked over the PA speaker, but I can't seem to grab any memories that haven't been made right here, on this stage.  What else is there? my soul asks me as Turner uses the cord of the mic to spin it in a circle and snatch it back in one tattooed hand.
My solo comes to a natural end, and I fall right back where I left off, taking the band with me, opening my ears up to Turner's voice as it slides into the microphone.  It's unbelievable – my words from his lips.  I step back and Hayden moves up beside him, doing her best to out sex her colleague.
It doesn't work.
I don't think it's even possible to out sex Turner Campbell.
He grabs the hem of his shirt and slides it up, flashing his taut belly and a sea of tattoos against pale, sweaty flesh.  His fingers rub the dark hair above his jeans and then drop the fabric back into place, much to the dismay of the crowd.
“Tearing me up, shredding me inside; my walls are coming down in flames.”  Hayden's voice slides in alongside Turner's and for a split second there, I'm jealous.  Of what and who and why, I have no idea, because I fucking hate them both, and they deserve each other, but …  I brush the feeling aside and slam my axe to bits with my pick.  “If you break me, baby, be prepared to pick up the pieces.”
Three.  Two.  One.  And the song is over, and my pick is flying out across the crowd and landing in greedy hands.  Sweat pours down my face in sheets and my body is wracked with violent trembles.  Turner spins around and grins at me as the crowd explodes into a riotous fervor that makes the bouncers nervous.

GET BENT (CONTAINS SPOILERS if you have not read Real Ugly!!!!)

I tap the vein in my right arm with two fingers and check the rubber tourniquet that's wrapped around my sweaty flesh, making sure it's pulled tight.  I'm trying to set up a good injection site, so I can take the syringe I've got clutched between my teeth and shoot up.  It's the only way I'll get through this.  The only fucking way.
“Turner!  What the hell is going on in there?”  I slump against the wall and ignore Treyjan's hoarse shouting.  He's been out there all damn morning, screaming his friggin' head off.  I don't want to hear it anymore.  He's driving me nuts.
I pull the syringe out of my mouth and slide the needle into my skin, hissing at the rush of white hot pain when it punctures my vein.  I press the plunger down and wait.  A few seconds later, I feel it in the back of my throat.  It tastes like fucking victory, like accomplishment, like I'm king of the fucking world.  I yank the needle out unceremoniously and toss it into the trash can.  It lands on top of a mountain of used condoms and tissue paper, and it's probably unsanitary as shit, but I don't care.  I don't care about anything right now except Naomi.
Naomi.
“Turner, get your fucking ass out here now!”
I rip the tourniquet off next and lay it on the counter, clutching the sides of the sink as I lean over and cough.  Good meth always makes you cough.  And it makes you feel so fucking good that even a nightmare like this starts to look like a dream.
“Are you slamming meth in there, motherfucker?” Trey screams, and he sounds like he's about to burst a damn vein this time.  I lift my eyes up and stare at myself in the mirror.  It's not a pretty sight.  I look like shit.  Jesus Christ.  Have I been walking around like this for three days?  My eyes are bloodshot and ringed with purple, and my lips are pale and cracked.  I look like a Goddamn zombie.
“Don't get your panties in a wad, bitch,” I call out to him, standing up and sniffing, letting my eyes fall closed for another minute.  At least now I don't have to worry about how I'm going to get through another day.  The drugs will take care of that for me.
Naomi.
I reach over and unlock the door.
Trey doesn't waste any time opening it and throwing me a death glare.  I ignore him in favor of putting on some eyeliner.  We have a show tonight, and I want to look good.  Hell, I have to look good or I'm not getting onstage.  My pain is private, not something to hang out for all to see.  I'm not on display here.
“You got a hard-on for me or something?” I ask him, pretending that everything's alright, that my life has not just gone from bad to worse, that the breath has not just been suctioned out of my fucking lungs.  “I can't even shit in peace anymore?”  Trey looks down at the garbage, up at the tourniquet and sneers.
“You're just gonna get high everyday now?”  I shrug, applying black around my eyes, making sure it's thick enough to hide the circles.  Women love eyeliner on guys anyway.  Or at least the women at my shows do, the ones with the piercings in their noses and the tattoos on their hips.  I want to pick one of them up and fuck away the pain, but I can't do that to Naomi.  For the first time in my life, I can't even imagine screwing another woman.
I look up at the ceiling as my brain seizures with false pleasure, misplaced hope, fatal courage.
“What are you now, Mother Theresa?  We've gotten high everyday since we were sixteen.”  I pretend not to notice that Trey is wearing Travis' cap.  Or whoever's cap.  Still haven't figured that mystery out.  There seem to be a whole shit ton of them floating around right now, and that's kind of the least of my worries.
Naomi.
“Not like this, Turner.  Not fucking like this.  What are you doing?  You're gonna kill yourself.”  I don't tell my best friend that I don't care, that I'd rather die than live without Naomi Knox.  I mean, how fucked up is that?  Love sucks balls.  Everybody always acts like it's the one thing worth living for, that spark in the fire that pulls you in, that strokes your hair back and lets you know that everything's going to be okay.  Well now that I've fallen into it, nothing is okay.  Nothing will ever be okay.  I sipped from love's wine and now I'm drunk as shit without a place to lie down.  My happy ending, my saving grace is lying dead in a morgue, cut up and fucked up, so mangled they can't even identify her damn body for sure.  Oh, they say it's probably her because if not then, I mean, where the shit is she?  Where?  Where?  Where the fuck are you, Knox?  With your pretty blonde hair and your sunglasses and your fuck you all attitude.

Heller's Decision by JD Nixon

You know sometimes when you are waiting for something for so long, once you get it, it kind of falls short of your expectations? Heller's Decision DEFINITELY did not have that problem.  It was totally worth the wait.  I just wish I read slower so I didn't have to wait as long for Heller's Regret!

I don't know how JD does it, but I think each book gets better than the last! I think this should be one of those series' that just never ends.  If she can keep us this interested after 5 books, surely she can keep it going forever, right? OK, FINE...I know it has to end but I am just glad that there are at least a few more adventures to come for the "Heller Family".

Just when I thought Tilly couldn't possibly get into any more trouble...she brings in a monkey?! Yes, I said monkey!! This book had me laughing so unbelievably hard with the bathroom scene (Yes, another HYSTERICAL bathroom scene).  It also held me in suspense on more than one occasion.  It had me really liking characters that I normally don't, and hating some that I usually love.

All joking aside, to be able to keep readers in such suspense and intrigue throughout the 5th book in a series is a major feat, and I am happy to say that JD Nixon has pulled it off perfectly!  Way to go on another AWESOME book.  Can't wait for the next.  Keep an eye our for Heller's Regret, due out before the end of the year.

Losing Hope (Hopeless #2) by Colleen Hoover

I didn't think it was possible to love Holder more than I already did.  Then I read the first chapter of Losing Hope.  Not only did I fall for Holder all over again, my heart completely shattered for him.

I jumped into Losing Hope expecting that I knew what would happen since I read Hopeless.  (Actually, I loved Hopeless so much it made it onto my Honor Roll list!)  But that was only partly true.  This book far exceeded any of my expectations.  Holder is so much more complex that I could have ever imagined.

I actually think I felt more for Holder reading his story than I did for Sky when I read hers.  While the things that happened to Sky were truly horrible, she lived a happy life.  Holder, however, was so consumed by the events of his life that he never got a reprieve.  The depth that Holder felt everything, the way he held on to Hope and his letters to Les.... those letters, every one of them, they just ripped my heart out.

Bravo Colleen Hoover, bravo!

Every Breath (Every Life Series #1) by Tasha Ivey

This. Book. Was. Amazing!!!! No joke one of the best I have read all year,
and I have read a LOT of books this year. It literally has everything you
would want from a book. Drama? Check! Romance? Double Check!! Laughter? Yup!  Tears?? Many! Action? Most Definitely.

When you first meet Makenna, you immediately think she is this sweet, happy,
bubbly little thing. And BOY would you be wrong...ever since the love of her life was tragically taken from her, she has been struggling to even exist.

Sawyer. I have never met a man so unbelievably damaged before. But is he  beyond repair? Will he ever really be able to bury his demons deep enough to become whole again?

Then there's Drew!! Can someone REALLY be that amazingly perfect? Right from the beginning he melted my heart with how wonderfully compassionate he was with Makenna!!

So this book brought me a new book boyfriend... possibly one of my favorites!! But is it be Sawyer or Drew?!   Guess you'll have to read it to figure out!!

I cannot wait for book 2, Every Kiss, due out October 2013.

BLOG TOUR AND GIVEAWAY: Off Course (Off Series #4) by Sawyer Bennett

Renner Caldwell has her life perfectly mapped out. She has the ideal relationship, the perfect job and all is right in her world. When a shameful turn of events happens, she boards the first plane bound for Ireland to lick her wounds and get her head back on straight.

Cillian O’Braidagh is the sexy, front man to the Irish rock band, Over The Edge. His rising fame and sultry voice make him every woman’s fantasy come true. Not to mention his single-minded determination. To put it simply: what Cillian wants, Cillian always gets. And he wants Renner, because there’s just something about the flame-haired beauty he has to possess.

If their relationship was just about sex and rock n’ roll, it would be easy for them to get lost in their desires. Only their relationship is anything but a hook-up. Will lies, deceit and hidden tragedy get in the way, making the path to true love uncertain? Or will the girl whose been knocked Off Course, find her footing with the man who is teaching her it’s okay to lose control?

Review

OH. MY. GOD!  Cillian is amazing!  I thought Nix (from Off Sides) would forever be my favorite Sawyer Bennett man, but I'm not so sure about that anymore.  Cillian was everything I loved about Nix, plus he was a Rock Star! And, well.... I may be a sucker for a guy who can sing and play guitar.

Renner Caldwell (who is Linc (Off the Record) and Nix's cousin), after being dismissed from her job with Delta Airlines under humiliating circumstances, runs to her extended family Ireland to put her life back together.  Enter Cillian.  The super sexy rock god who she has an electrically charged connection with and a history.  There was never a moment I did not want these two to together, however, they face some serious obstacles that have Renner thinking about her ex and running for the hills.

This book has all angst filled romance roller-coaster that I just cannot seem to get enough of.  I'm excited to learn more about Renner's brother Flynn in book number 5, Off Chance, due out October 2013.  Off Chance will be the last book in this great series and I'm really sad to know that its done! I cannot wait to see what Sawyer Bennett has in store for her readers after the Off Series!

About JD Nixon:

I live in beautiful Queensland in Australia. I started writing in 2009 because I wanted to do something creative and haven't stopped since! I have two series of books:

The Heller series (first book Heller - free!) features the frequently outlandish adventures of security officer, Tilly Chalmers, and her complicated relationship with her beautiful, mysterious and intense boss, Heller.

The Little Town series (first book Blood Ties - free!) features police officer, Tess Fuller, and her struggle to survive a long-standing vendetta with the feral Bycraft family and at the same time manage the tense relationship between her new partner, Finn Maguire, and her boyfriend, Jake Bycraft.

My author dream is to one day write a short story (which for me will probably be about 50,000 words!) where Tilly & Heller meet Tess & Finn. What a story that would be! Maybe over the end-of-year break???

I hope you enjoy reading my books as much as I enjoyed writing them! I'd love to hear your feedback, so why not email me at: jdn.author@gmail.com.

INTERVIEW

Jillian and I had the opportunity to send off some questions to the amazing JD Nixon!  We both love the Little Town and Heller series that JD has created and we cannot wait to sink our teeth into more of her work.  What makes us love JD beyond her books is her interaction with her readers!  JD is active on her Facebook page as well as her fan club page.

I know I personally found JD though my friend Jenn (you may remember her from our post about the NYC Occasionalist Author Event) after she found this amazing free book called Heller.  After a few weeks of listening to her pester me and tell me that I had to check out this series I finally caved to her whim and well… the rest is history!  I immediately jumped on the JD Nixon bandwagon and never want to get off.  As you can tell by its inclusion on my Honor Roll list, the Heller series is a personal favorite of mine!  Jillian’s discovery of JD happened rather similarly to mine, however, I may have played Jenn’s role.  She is more partial to the Little Town series, but we can both agree that JD is one heck of a writer!

On to the questions!

What is one secret Heller hasn't told anyone?

JD: He’s afraid of being alone.

Danielle: I never would have guessed that!  Though, the way he “collects” lost souls I can see it now that I think about it!  It really would explain a lot about him.

Jillian: Oh I totally can see that. Even though he wants you to think he is this big tough guy, I think he's afraid of way more than he lets on!

If we were able to ask Heller's mom to describe him in 10 words or less, what do you think she would say?

JD: He was a difficult child to understand.

Danielle: Why am I not surprised by this?  I hope we get to meet Heller’s mom!

Jillian: I think that he is the way he is BECAUSE his mom couldn't understand him and nurture him the way he needed her to.  I also don't think she tried very hard!

Danielle: You know, you may be onto something there Jillian!

What is Tilly's biggest fear?

JD: Loving Heller.
Danielle:  Huh…. I think I need to sit and contemplate this for a while, I hope there is a HEA for Tilly AND Heller in our future!  *anxiously bites nails*

Jillian: Yeah, I'd be afraid to love him too!!!

Will Daniel ever enter the "real world"?

JD: I don’t think so.

Danielle:  This makes me really sad!  I love Daniel and really want nothing more than for him to be happy.

Jillian:  Me too!!! He is probably one of the kindest, most tortured characters I have ever "met".

Will Dixie start playing a bigger role in the story line at any point?

JD: No.

Danielle:  Darn, she’s a hoot!

Jillian:  LOL. Maybe she’ll hit it big and ran off to star in some blockbuster!

What color hair does Victor have?

JD: Black? Dunno yet.

Danielle:  Darn, my scheme to find out more about Victor seems to have been thwarted!

Jillian:  I think he's Hellers imaginary friend!!

Will we ever meet Victor?

JD: Yes.
Danielle: *SQUEE!!!!*

Jillian: Haha. Ok so MAYBE he is real.

You announced on the JD Nixon Fan Club on Facebook page that you are planning on releasing two Heller books in a row before re-visiting Little Town, what was the motivation behind that?

JD: I felt as though I robbed all my readers by not producing books on order. But especially Heller readers :) Also, it’s easier for me to stay in one world to write more than switch between the two. It really takes a while for my mind to adjust to the different characters, tempo, surroundings and context. After writing a book where I’m fully immersed in that world, I actually feel rather resentful being pulled into the other, and it takes me a while to start loving those characters again. Right now, I’m in Heller land, and it’s Tessie and Finn WHO????

Danielle:  Well as a Heller fan this makes me super excited… but I want more Tess and Finn too!  Such an “awful” dilemma.  I guess I’ll just have to hold out a bit longer for Tess and Finn while I gobble up some Heller and Tilly deliciousness!

Jillian: I NEED to know what happens with the Sarge!!! Maybe you will throw out a teaser for us Little Town fanatics, JD?!?

Where has your inspiration for Heller's world come from?

JD: Partly from a dream I had about the Warehouse, partly from Carlos, The Ranger, in the Stephanie Plum books, partly from a guy I saw on TV, mostly from my imagination :)

Jillian: That's too funny.  I IMMEDIATELY thought of Ranger when I started this series.  Then once I really got into it he flew right out of my mind!

Danielle:  Wow, JD you have one great imagination!  I kind of wish I could be a fly on the wall of your brain… maybe I could find out more about Victor that way!

If you could "poof" any one of your characters into existence who would it be and why?  (from either series)

JD: Maybe Heller himself. I’d be interested to inspect just how beautiful he really is :)

Jillian:  Yummy!!!

Danielle:  Ah… JD is obviously my kind of woman!

Are any of your characters based on real people?

JD: No.

Danielle: Darn, that means there is no “real” Heller to drool over, huh?

Jillian:  I knew he was too good to be true!

When did you start writing?

JD: July 2009 – Heller was my first book.
Danielle:  And what a great first book it is!

Jillian:  Yeah, seriously great start. Never stop please!

What prompted you to sit down the first time and start writing a book?

JD: I was informed in a work-based survey that I lacked ‘self-actualisation’. After I looked that up, I realised people were telling me I was not creative enough. WTH? After writing these books, I still get people at work telling me they’re surprised I’m creative! I’m really good at keeping secrets.

Jillian: Way to stick it to them and prove them COMPLETELY wrong!

Danielle:  I find it fascinating that people don’t think your creative JD.  The vividness of both the Warehouse and Little Town in my mind are proof that you are incredibly talented!  I can’t imagine myself creating even one, let alone two, entirely fictional worlds!

What is your writing process?  Are you a start to finish writer or a plan and notes type of writer or something in between?

JD: I call myself an ‘organic’ writer. I have a general idea of the story, but sometimes it evolves in ways I don’t expect!

Danielle:  I wonder what has happened in Heller that JD didn’t expect?!?!?  (Okay, Little Town too!)

Jillian:  That's so cool. It sounds like so much fun to develop a story like that!

Do you have any other books/series in the works?

JD: I have ideas for series after Heller and Little Town.

Danielle:  Glad to know there will be more from you once its time to *sniffle* leave the Warehouse and Little Town, JD…  I know all good things must come to an end, but I will definitely miss these two series once they are done.  Thank goodness I can just re-read them whenever I want!

Jillian:  WOOHOO! Can't wait to see what else you have cooked up!

Is there any advice you'd give new authors about writing?

JD: Never whine about reviews. Not everyone will like your book – get over it and keep on writing :)
Danielle: GREAT advice JD!

Jillian:  But probably VERY hard to follow!

How about self publishing?

JD: I’m totally a Smashwords girl!
Danielle:  Hear that Jillian?

Jillian:  Yeah, yeah!!! I hear it! LOL

How are you feeling about the decision to cut your hours at work?

JD: Very conflicted. I’ve worked there a long time and they are very staff stressed at the moment. I have to decide if I love my books more than my workmates. It’s so hard …  I’ve since decided my books (and more importantly my family’s health) is more important than that job. I’ve left. So hard…

Danielle:  I can only imagine the stress this decision has caused you JD.  I sincerely hope it turns out to be the best decision of your life!  I know your fans are excited about you having more writing time at least!  I think I can speak for both of us when I say we sincerely hope that both you and JD Jr start feeling better soon!

Jillian:  That is tough! I admire you for being strong enough to take that leap!

Now that you've decided to write full time, do you think you'll come out as JD Nixon in your personal life?

JD: I’m not sure I’ll have a choice – my hubby can’t keep a secret to save his life!

Danielle:  Husbands are good at blabbing aren’t they?  And they say “we” are the gossipers!

Jillian:  HAHA! Isn't that the truth!

Is there anything you would like to say to your fans?

JD: A humble, humble thank you for taking a chance on an unknown author <3

Danielle:  I think JD needs to stop thinking she is an “unknown” author... just sayin’!

Jillian:  Yeah...and a big thank you to HER for giving us all HOURS of amazing entertainment.

Is it true that you really enjoy torturing them?  Some of those teasers you posted right before you released the first chapter of Heller's Decision were pretty brutal!  (Of course we all loved you for them too!)

JD: Um…. [I think I hear the phone ringing!]
Danielle: Un-huh…. Just what I suspected!

Jillian:  Keep them coming!!  Come on...give us some good old fashioned Little Town torture!

Finally, how do you balance being a mom with both your "real" career (especially when you were working full time) and being a writer?  Do you think it was easier/harder because JD Jr was older (as in not a toddler and presumably in school most of the day) when you started writing?

JD: Terrible balancing. Big failure. JD Jr went through a medical crisis and everything was suspended then. More tests for him in the near future, so who knows … I’ve had a bit of a medical issue myself recently that has made me re-evaluate what’s important, and I can tell you that work is a low priority. I feel rather blessed at the moment to perhaps do something I love for a living. We’ll see how it goes – you’re only as good as your last book! :)

Danielle:  Both Jillian and I can relate to kids having medical crises, it does make any balancing act a lot tougher.  I know my world has stopped a few times when Baby Girl has had issues related to her health and prematurity.  Here is to JD figuring out what is going to work for her, her family, and her writing!  We hope both you and JD Jr are feeling better soon!

Jillian:  Oh totally!  I never thought I'd be able to juggle 6 doctor appointments, a full time job and a play date in one week.  But I have! AND I even managed to shower and brush my teeth too!

Thank you again JD for sitting down and taking the time to answer our questions.  We are truly humbled that you were willing to take a chance on our little blog!

You are most welcome, and thanks for even considering interviewing me! It’s a pleasure :)

Cautious (Disasterouse #2) by E.L. Montes

I would love to report that my feelings for Marcus have changed... but they haven't, and it bums me out because I really wanted them too.  I understand him better, for sure, I even have sympathy for him, but I just don't love and adore him like I feel I should.  While his gentile side is above and beyond, Macus has a habit of making very bad decisions.

I will say though, I actually really liked the whole story line of this series.  It was well paced and felt plausible, which is a good thing.  What got me hung up was all the description in the book.  I'm a very slow reader with a very vivid imagination, so when books have a ton of description I get almost distracted by creating the world in my head.  I can tell you EXACTLY how I think Marcus' house looks like and how its laid out.  I have a hunch that this won't be an issue for most people though!  I had considered giving up at one point but I really wanted to know how everything was going to play out, so I decided to stop "reading" and just "skim" the descriptive stuff and read the dialogue.  Once I made that decision I got intensely into the story.

Excerpt

"You remember me?" she asks in awe.
Stepping up close to her again, I grab her chin between my thumb and forefinger so her gaze stays locked on me. I swear a feel a sizzle of electricity from the contact of my skin on hers. "That I do. Five years ago, I kissed a girl that was fresh, and young, and innocent... and so not ready for the likes of me." Releasing her chin, I rake my eyes down her body and slowly move them up again. I like what I see...a lot, and I take pleasure in the fact that her breath hitches just a little under my perusal. "You're all grown up, Renner. I'm bettin' you could handle me now."
She lets out a shaky breath, and there it is... her eyes go dark. The knowledge that my words alone do that to her thrills me beyond measure. I can't wait to see what type of response my tongue can get.
"Now, let's go get that drink and we can see just how well can you handle me."
The blinding smile I expect to get from her doesn't come. Instead, her eyes lighten back up and there's now a scowl on her forehead.
Putting her hands on my chest, she pushes me back away from her. "In your dreams, O'Bradaigh," she sneers. "I may have been stupid enough to fall for your sexy lines before, but you're right... I am all grown up now and I have better things to do than waste my time with an arrogant musician."
I stare at her for just a moment, stunned she's turning me down. Then I throw my head back laughing. She glares at me and crosses her arms across her chest. She clearly doesn't get my amusement but I am indeed amused with her. If she wants to play hard to get, I have time to play.
Reaching out, I wrap my hand around her throat, skimming my thumb softly along her jaw. "My cailín álainn has some claws. I'm going to enjoy them when they’re sunk deep into my back while I'm riding you."
"Aaaagghhh," she screams in frustration, at the same time knocking my hand away. I take a step back for good measure, just in case she decides to let a fist or foot fly my way. "You are a conceited, egotistical, jackass and the only place my claws will be sunk will be in your balls if you try to touch me again."
I give her a well-calculated smirk. "Now that thought just turns me on, Renner. You have a gift for words."
In all actuality, it doesn't turn me on... thinking about her ripping my balls to shreds, but I'm having far too much fun teasing her.
Now... that lovely high and angry blush she's wearing? Yes, that's turning me on. I wonder if her cheeks will get that red when she comes. I bet she blushes all the way down to her breasts.

Group Interview!

You’ve heard of speed dating, yes? This is sort of like that—you get to “date” four authors in one interview. One question, four very different answers. If you like what you read, you can take the relationship further by hopping around the other blogs in Linky to get to know these authors better.

Who would play your angel(s) in a movie?

Patricia Leever: I love this one because I love playing, “Cast That Character!” and I take it seriously. No joke I will spend hours upon hours searching for just the right person. That being said, if Divinity were made into a movie and I could have my dream cast, Gabriel would have to be played by Taylor Kitsch, without a doubt.

Carol Oates: I don’t tend to have actors in mind when I write. Usually the person is completely created in my mind from the soles of their feet up. Sometimes, I will come across someone after who I think might suit. This tends to change a lot. I’ve answered this question for Sebastian and Candra when Ember was released in 2011, and unusually, my choice hasn’t changed at all. For Candra I would select Mia Wasikowska and for Sebastian, Alexander Ludwig.

Debra Anastasia: I love Emma Stone and my main angel is named Emma so the fit would be perfect. I definitely want Johnny Depp as my sexy Satan. He has lust as one of his super powers. And vibrating fist. Yum.

Nicki Elson: I’ve got an infamous Abercrombie & Fitch bag that lives in my closet—if the guy on it can act, even just a little bit, he’s got the part. Otherwise I’ll give the model from the book cover a shot. And if he doesn’t work out either, ever since I learned that Benedict Cumberbatch is a natural blond…well, I’ve been thinking that rich voice of his could murmur Evan’s lines quite nicely.

Why out of all paranormal beings did you choose angel for your story/series?

Carol Oates: I don’t think I chose angels. I think it was more that the story dictated the beings. A book about angels unable to return to Heaven wouldn’t have been the same story without them.

Debra Anastasia: I mostly picked them for their wings. I wanted the freedom to use my imagination to describe their magic. I wound up using their feathers as weapons!

Nicki Elson: I have a penchant for writing realistic fiction, and I believe in angels, so going that route was a natural choice for me to tell this supernatural tale. I’m also fascinated by the tradition and rituals of the Catholic church, so it was fun to be able to work some of it’s more ominous aspects, like exorcisms, into the story.

Patricia Leever: Well, I guess Gabriel kind of chose me. The demon hunters needed a guide, if you will, a sort of boss-man that gave them direction and who better to give them direction than Gabriel, the voice of God.

What were the challenges (research, psychological, etc.) in bringing your angel story/series to life?

Debra Anastasia: I think the hardest part was writing God as a character. I never wanted to be disrespectful, but I did want an ultimate influence of positive energy there for the characters.

Nicki Elson: It was a trick to keep my angel true to what I believe angels to be while also making him a compelling romantic interest. Then again, having him be forbidden romantically made it easy to kick up the URST several notches.

Patricia Leever: I guess my biggest challenge was deciding what religious lore to follow, because there are so many different versions of the same being. In the end I didn’t follow one specifically just sort of blended parts of him from them all.

Carol Oates: I’ve always had an interest in religious stories, the concept of an afterlife and beings we know as angels. The story and all the elements are the sum of a lifetime of questioning and reading.

I think my main challenge of not offending anyone eclipsed any other. People have strong and fixed opinions on what God is, what angels are, what is good and what is evil. In Ember, I wanted to delve into those questions, but at the end of the day, these are characters in a piece of fiction. I didn’t want to come across as belittling anyone’s belief. I posed the questions, but the exploration is each character’s, not mine. When a character struggles with abandonment and the duality of good and evil in human nature, that’s rooted in who they are, and choices they’ve made. So, they won’t come up with the same conclusions I would.

Basically, it was very important to me that the story be character driven and entertaining, and about their journey rather than a reflection of anything I do or don’t believe.

What was the first spark of inspiration that made you want to write your angel book/series?

Nicki Elson: I was reading a certain YA paranormal romance series and noted that the heroine just sort of gave up her own identity and life once the supernatural white knight arrived on the scene. So I thought it would be interesting to see how a mature, responsible, somewhat guarded adult woman would react to a handsome, otherworldly man being dropped into her life—Maggie doesn’t exactly handle everything maturely or responsibly, but she also can’t so readily walk away from the rest of her life to be with him the way she wants to be, and that struggle was what I wanted to explore.

Patricia Leever: The first spark was the main character, Evelyn, a 135 year old demon hunter. She was the driving force in my brain and I had to give her a purpose other than just some random ageless chick that went around killing demons for no reason whatsoever. Enter Lebriga Corporation and Lebriga is an anagram for Gabriel.

Carol Oates: The Book of Enoch, an ancient Jewish text and The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde both gave the first spark of life to Ember in their own way. The story of the Watchers from The Book of Enoch is well known and I think the threads through the story are obvious. Not so much with The Selfish Giant. For me, Sebastian is the giant, wallowing in a garden that will never see spring. Misery attracts misery, and sometimes putting others’ happiness and peace first is the only way to find our own.

Debra Anastasia: I was entering a monster contest! And of course my entry was a cursing angel. I lost, but I loved the story so much I turned it into a book!

About the Authors

Patricia Leever is a wife, stay-at-home mom of four and owner of one dog and one little black cat. On the average school day she runs about town like a lunatic picking-up and dropping off kids and trying to find a moment of quiet to write down a word or two. She’s a sci-fi geek that loves to dress up like a zombie and participate in the local zombie march down Main St. and laugh as much as possible; laughter frees the mind and heals the soul.

Live. Breathe. Write.

Carol Oates has never been one to remain still for long. After her parents' mad dash to the hospital through the empty city streets of Dublin, Ireland, Carol made her debut into the world in the early hours of Christmas morning. Since then her pace has not slowed down in the least.

Carol was introduced to the world of supernatural books when, as a child, her family moved to a coastal suburb on the northern border of Dublin known as Clontarf, famous as the birthplace of Bram Stoker, the prolific author responsible for breathing life into the legendary story Dracula. This stirred in Carol an early passion for reading about all things supernatural. Combine that passion with a deep interest in the history and folklore of Ireland, as well as an active and vivid imagination, and Carol Oates the author was born. Carol's love of writing about anything not entirely "human" emerged, and the premise for her debut novel, Shades of Atlantis, was born.

Debra Anastasia is busy, just like every other mom. There's dinner, the dogs, the kids, and their homework. The laundry pile turns into a big, heaping monster. When the clothes finally make it into the washer, it gets unbalanced and puts on an elaborate show before it cuts out. This crazy job that never ends is her first love and her crowning achievement.

Her writing started a decent handful of years ago when along with the dogs, cat, kids, and husband, the voices of characters started whispering stories in Debra's ear. Insomnia was the gateway for the plots that wouldn't give up, wouldn't let go. In the shower, a twist would take hold and--dripping and frenzied--she'd find somewhere, anywhere to write it down.Debra grew up in New York and got a bachelor's degree in political science at SUNY New Paltz. At the start of her marriage, she moved to southern Maryland with her husband. She still doesn't trust crabs and all their legs, though everyone else in her family thinks they're delicious. Her favorite hobbies include knitting, painting furniture and wall murals, and slapping clowns.

Omnific Publishing published her debut novel, #1 on Kindle Best Seller’s list, Crushed Seraphim, and its sequel Bittersweet Seraphim about a cursing angel. They also bravely published Poughkeepsie, which a romance about a homeless man who counts the smiles of his dream girl. You can visit her website at DebraAnastasia.com and find her on twitter @Debra_Anastasia.

Writing wasn't something Nicki Elson set out to do; it just sort of happened when she realized writing reports was by far her favorite part of her investment consulting position. She traded stock allocation and diversification for story arcs and dialogue and now weaves her creative writing time in with the other activities of her busy life with her family in the Chicago suburbs.

Nicki writes with two goals in mind: #1 to keep the characters realistic, even when their circumstances are anything but, and #2 to make the reader feel. Her published works include Three Daves, a light-hearted romantic romp through a 1980s college campus, Divine Temptation, a romantic novel of angelic proportions, and short stories “Sway” (available as a single), “I Don’t Do Valentine’s Day” (part of A Valentine Anthology), and “Impressionism 101” (included in the debut issue of Insatiable: The Magazine of Paranormal Desire).

Author Spotlight: Debra Anastasia

Books:

How does a foul-mouthed angel end up as the last hope for all of Heaven and Earth? When Seraph Emma is maimed and tossed from Heaven by a rogue angel who's taken charge, she fears she'll never be allowed to return. Tasked with the impossible job of showing the self-loathing (and not even human!) Jason his worth, Emma is sure she's doomed to fail. Meanwhile, having wormed his way into Heaven, the corrupt Everett has trapped God in Hell and has designs on unleashing evil everywhere. Fortunately, if there's one thing Emma can't do (in addition to minding her language), it's give up. Determined to save Jason and get back to Heaven-even if it means going to Hell-Emma's plan is simple yet impossible: trick the Devil to save God. What she doesn't count on is the devotion and, well, humanity she finds in Jason; the spirit, hidden compassion, and raw sex appeal within the Devil; and the vulnerability of her own heart. With the help of two unlikely allies, she'll wage the battle for Heaven. But will Emma be sidetracked by a new sort of heaven along the way? What's truly more dangerous? Falling from Heaven, or falling in love? Debra Anastasia has twisted a fast-paced tale of intimate relationships with literally universal impact. Rich with humor and electrified by attraction, this novel offers a playfully off-beat take on the good and evil that make up the world.

Suffering is worst when you're doing it alone. But Emma's taking Hell like an angel-even though her languishing began with having her seraph wings torn from her back. Now her worst enemy lords his body and his evil desires over her while she tries desperately to remember the words to her favorite prayer. As Devil, Jack used to have Hell and its women humming like well-oiled machines. Too bad he's nowhere near the place now. Stuck on Earth as a human, he must work with a ragtag team of exiled minions and half-breeds to save the angel who's become all that matters. Rescuing a seraph is the plan, but breaking into Hell means letting evil things out. Once they collide, minions and angels converge in the battle of the ages: good versus evil. But which side is which? Will Jack destroy the world as he fights to save Emma, his true and timeless love, from a damnation he designed? An action-packed sequel to Crushed Seraphim, this tale reveals-time and again-what happens when the heart's deepest desires break free. With a story both sizzling and sensual, emotional and enigmatic, Debra Anastasia invites readers to join a battle with nothing less than love on the line.

Debra Anastasia on Jack

In my Seraphim series there is one character who stands out from the rest. Is it bad form to say he is a favorite? Because he totally is my favorite in these angel books of mine. He was officially supposed to help the fallen angel that was tearing up Heaven. But he had different plans. When I sent my cursing angel to him, they fell in love. And then Satan Jack took over my entire book. In my head he looks like Johnny Depp, so maybe I just wanted more of him in the scenes. Here’s some of his best quotes:

“Please, baby, you had to know the Devil would be well endowed.”

“You want to be bad, angel? I can teach you every position it comes in.”

“There is something about me, doll face. It’s between my legs, and I do believe a few minutes ago you were praying to it.”

“You might want to have Kate close her eyes if you ever want her to sleep with you, asshole. Because once I take off my pants, you’ll always come second.”

“My love, I’d volunteer to live a thousand lives if I got to spend any part of them with you.”

That’s my dirty, sexy Satan Jack. He will shock you and rock you.

XO

Debra
