Deep Blue Alibi (Solomon vs. Lord #2) by Paul Levine

I told you that I wasn’t finished with the Solomon vs. Lord series. Paul Levine hits it of the park with this second book, Deep Blue Alibi (to use one of Steve Solomon’s idioms). I’m not sure what it is, but I find that a lot of the sequels I have been reading lately do not meet my expectations like the first book in the series. However, that does not by any means imply it is not a good read. While I loved this book, it wasn’t as awesome as Solomon vs. Lord.

This book kept me laughing though and I got to read about another potential love triangle as Victoria entertains the possibility of reuniting with the boy that gave her her first kiss as a teenager. To Steve’s utter dismay, the boy is very much a handsome, rich, talented, and tanned (and definitely well endowed - as you'll read) man named Junior. It was funny to see how Steve reacted to Junior as he and Victoria attempt to prove Junior’s father innocent of a murder. Not only is that going on, but Victoria is also dabbling in the possibility of being a solo lawyer and moving away from having Steve as a partner. This is the reason why I wasn’t as enthralled with this book as I was with the first. It seemed that Victoria is never happy with whatever situation she’s in; like she’s wanting/expecting more. Levine rationalizes it but I found it a bit annoying at times. I would have expected Steve to behave that way. Instead, he was the love-sick guy who could never do anything right in Victoria's eyes. Now, with that said, I really could not put the book down. It was action packed and it had a lot of laugh out loud moments, which is hard to get me to do. I can’t wait to see what happens next with these two.

Solomon vs. Lord (Book #1) by Paul Levine

Can I just say how much I loved this book? A friend introduced this series to me and when I heard what it was about, I had to try it out. I love Lisa Scottoline's legal reads (as well as her other series) and I love the comedy that Janet Evanovich provides in her series. This series is like a Scottoline-Evanovich hybrid. There's comedy, romance, love triangle, whodunit... it's just a great read. It's about a female lawyer, Victoria Lord, who has her life all planned out (she's a new prosecutor and has a rich fiancé) until she meets this annoying - yet incredibly yummy - lawyer, Steve Solomon; then the fun begins. Victoria is a straightedge chick who does everything by the book. Steve is more of a "let's wing it" kind of guy. It was hilarious to read what Steve does to push Victoria's buttons inside and outside the courtroom. I could easily see this as a television series.

I got really excited when I discovered the book goes back and forth between Victoria's and Steve's POV. Like I said, there's a lot of humor in the book as well as mystery (and legal drama - the judges were hilarious!) and I just love Bobby, Steve's autistic eleven-year-old nephew. That boy is a hoot! I am about to get started on the second book in this series soon. So I'm sure this won't be the last time you hear me talk about Solomon vs. Lord or Paul Levine.

RELEASING JULY 14, 2014

Who would you become if you lost the only person who ever mattered?

For twenty-six year old Dylan Hopkins, the answer is easy. He’s become no one. Memories of the happier times are all he has left as he finds himself meandering numbly through his now dull life. Though he cares about his work and family dearly, he’s yet to let himself find love again. Afraid of letting go of what he once had, Dylan chooses to keep his heart buried, where it belongs, having died a long time ago.

Conner Michelson is about to change everything Dylan knows. He’s every bit the bad boy persona - tatted up, ex-MMA fighter, but after an injury leaves him unable to fight, he has to rethink his goals. Having just opened his own gym, Conner can cross his first major life accomplishment off his very short list. Next up: find a man he can settle down with and build a family. Seems simple enough - a dream most people have, but when he meets Dylan, his carefree, easy-going life is thrown into a tailspin.

Determined to keep Dylan in his life, Conner vows to resurrect Dylan's long ago buried heart and let love live once more.

About the author

Melissa Collins has always been a book worm. Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book. She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher. Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students. Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it’s been a dream.

Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently. When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it. It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.

Video Trailer

Prologue

I sat in the front row of the church with my left hand locked tightly into my mother’s, my right hand locked tightly into my best friend’s, and a small book tucked under my arm. I listened intently as person after person stood to read scriptures or offer words of comfort. Each person stopped in front of me, dabbed their red, swollen eyes as they gave me hugs and kisses, and offered me condolences. Like a robot, I automatically thanked each and every one of them and smiled as best I could.

My mother stood and approached the podium. She gave a beautiful eulogy; she summarized the ten short years of her grandson’s life better than anyone else could, including me. She told a few stories about the love between my sweet boy and me. Some even I had forgotten. She broke down a few times as she spoke on how hard the loss of his life had been on our family, but managed to make it to the end without completely falling apart. All the while, I stared at the shiny royal-blue child-sized coffin in front of me, feeling completely numb.

As the service wrapped up and the crowd made their way to their vehicles, I kept my eyes on the casket; I wanted to take in every moment I had left with my child. I needed it, because if there was one thing that I was able to comprehend in the big mess that my life had turned into, it was that these moments were devastatingly final. Therefore, I needed to stay in the moment and remember every detail.

When we approached the gravesite, I sat quietly as those around me stood and sang Amazing Grace.

“I once was lost, but now I’m found. Was blind, but now I see.”

I shook my head, wondering who the hell chose that song. It couldn’t be any further from the truth. In my twenty-eight years of living, I had never felt more lost, or blinder, than I did at that very moment.

When my only child‘s body began its descent into the earth, nothing about me felt right. It was as if my soul had taken up residence in a foreign body. I felt as if my right arm was missing, as if my lungs had lost their elasticity, and as if my heart had been ripped from my chest.

I managed to keep my tears at bay as the workers began to pile dirt and rocks into the hole. I found myself worrying about things I hadn’t thought of before. Would he be cold down there? Or get lonely? I didn’t know why, but somehow leaving him all alone in a hole in the ground suddenly seemed cruel. The wails of those around me started to infiltrate my thoughts, but I tried my best to push them out. I needed to focus on my son and myself. When I felt strong enough, I pushed to my feet and approached the freshly covered hole. I walked to the place where I knew his head lay and sat next to it.

Then I pulled out the book that I held for the last two hours and did what I had done every night for the last ten years.

I read my baby boy a story.

One-Knight Stand by Barbara Devlin

One - Knight Stand is the fourth book in the Brethren of the Coast series by Barbara Devlin. However, it can easily be read as a stand-alone. Aside from the Outlander series, it can be challenging for me to find a historical romance book that I really enjoy. Luckily, Devlin puts in a lot of humor and suspense in her series that makes it a fun read. This book did not have the suspense and action the three previous books are known for, but it is still a great read.

This book focuses on two life-long friends that have secretly loved each other but never announced it to each other. It was fun to read how the heroine, Cara, went about trying to get Lance, her hero, to see her as more than a friend. I really liked this book and it is hard to pick my favorite characters from the series. The only thing that I had an issue with was Lance's pet name for Cara, sugar kisses. It was a bit too cheesy for me as it was used a lot, but that was my only complaint regarding the book and should not deter you from reading it. I highly recommend everyone check out the whole series if you enjoy historical romances. I promise you won't be disappointed!

Review:

The first book I read by Doporto was a Sci-fi book, The Eslites. Loved it. I heard she had written another book in a different genre so I decided to check it out. WOW. Just. Wow. If you haven't checked out Opposing Sides, I highly recommend it. It's different than her other series, almost to the point where I was like "This is Doporto, right?" but it was no less awesome. The writing was completely different and the topics were different. I loved it! Doporto proves that she is a well-rounded author and can write in any genre.

This book is the first in a series and I'm really eager to get to know these characters. This book is about Lexi, a college student, trying to find who she is and what she wants in a relationship after meeting Raven, the college football quarterback. Sigh. I'm crushing on Raven. Just saying.

Fall to You (Here & Now #2) by Lexi Ryan

I am loving what Lexi Ryan is doing with this series.  I experienced such a huge range of emotions while reading Fall to You that I've been going crazy waiting to have someone to talk about it.  There are so many different scenarios I can think of for the conclusion of this series.  I'm not sure which will happen, but I do know which outcome I want!

The timeline was a little disappointing at first.  I was expecting  Fall to You to pick up right where Lost in Me  left off.  I obviously was anxious to get more details about THAT cliffhanger but I loved all the extra back story so much that I really didn't mind waiting for more info.  The story flowed really really well and I never felt lost or confused.  Lexi masterfully gave us the right amount of information at just the right time  to keep the story moving along in a very captivating way.  I really couldn't put it down.  If it weren't for life's commitments it would of been a marathon read for sure!

I'm thankful that the wait for the conclusion of the Hear and Now series, All for This, isn't far off.  Its expected out in August 2014.  Let me tell you Fall to You ended with a doozy of a cliffie!  Talk about making the readers sit on the edge of their seat in anticipation of book 3. It was the perfect ending and it went down EXACTLY how I wanted to to!

RELEASE DAY REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY: Fall to You (Here and Now #2) by Lexi Ryan

Fall to You is the second book in the Here and Now series. It is not a stand-alone and is intended to be read following Lost in Me. Hanna’s story concludes in book three, All for This.

Torn between two men…

When I woke up after the accident, I couldn’t remember anything from the last year—including my relationship with Max Hallowell or anything about Nate Crane. Now my memories are returning, but instead of answering my questions, they’re leaving me with more.

The man who broke my heart and wants to be my future…

Max is all I ever wanted, and now he wants to marry me. He’ll do everything he can to fill my life with love, family, and security. I need those things now more than ever. But can I trust him?

The man who stole my heart and wants to let me go…

Nate never made me promises, and I never asked him to. I’d been on the rebound, looking for a distraction, and he made me feel beautiful and wanted when I needed to feel those things most. He says he has to let me go, but what if I can’t let go of him?

With every revelation and every passing day, I feel more like Alice down the rabbit hole. I’m falling. Who will catch me?

About the Author

Once a college English professor, I now write full time. I live in rural Indiana, where, when I'm not writing, I get to hang out with my husband and two kids--a six-year-old boy and a two-year-old hellion, er, girl. Not surprisingly, reading and writing remain my favorite activities, though both come in bits and pieces these days, not the big hunks of time I enjoyed before I had children. When I'm feeling virtuous, I like to go running (I use that word liberally. I'm really, really slow) or do yoga. Don't worry, I'm always careful to balance out such activities with a hearty serving of ice cream or a chocolate martini.
